The Greatest Love Story (N)ever Told

Benjamin Kwan

This Friday, 14 February, many couples will be taking time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. For many couples, it is a day for romantic dinners, flowers and gifts. For many couples, they will be marking yet another milestone in their relationship, for many relationships have begun on that very same date. Across the globe on Valentine’s Day, couples will be writing another chapter in their love story.

And yet, in this season of love, I cannot help but think that all too often, the Greatest Love Story ever written is one that is all too often Never Told. Which love story is this? Why, the love that God showed towards humanity, of course!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

Who is not telling the Greatest Love Story (N)ever Told? Surely it is not God, who has left for us ample evidence of His love for us in the Scriptures. If it is not God, then surely, it must be our doing that this love story is not being told! Would God be pleased with our lack of desire to tell the world about the great love that He and His Son Jesus Christ have for all humanity? Would God be pleased if we flagrantly disregard the instruction to “Go and teach all nations?" Would God be pleased if we hide the solution for sin away from the rest of the world, by not telling others about the Greatest Love Story Ever Told?

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:19-20)
Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. (Ezekiel 3:17-19)

Why not take the first steps towards telling others about the Greatest Love Story Ever Told? This Saturday, 15 February, we will be gathering to give out tracts in the community, to tell others about the Lord’s church that meets at Lim Ah Pin Road, and to invite them to hear the gospel message, the good news of Jesus Christ (details of the tracting session are in the bulletin). Why not make the commitment to join us and help to give out tracts in the community? Who knows whether you will be the one to give out a tract to a household that is searching for truth?

On Sunday, 23 February, we will have a special sermon on “Evangelism Sunday” that is catered for visitors (details about Evangelism Sunday are in the bulletin). Why not invite your friends and family members to our services, to give them a chance to hear about the good news of Jesus Christ?

We understand that some of your friends or family members may feel intimidated at the thought of walking into the church building for the first time. Brother Ernest and myself stand ready and willing to arrange a discussion with them about the Bible and spiritual matters, but we need your help to introduce us to your friends and help connect us together!

Won’t you give your loved ones a chance to hear the Greatest Love Story Ever Told? We cannot accomplish this task without your help. Let’s all work together to spread the good news of God’s love for mankind everywhere and at every time. Though not all of us may preach over the pulpit, but every one of us can be a preacher (a herald, a proclaimer) of Jesus Christ to the people we meet every day.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! (Romans 10:13-15)
