5 Reasons to Read the Bible

1. To build a strong foundation (Matthew 7:24-27).

Jesus tells us of the wise man who built his house upon a rock. Because the house had a strong foundation, it could withstand the winds and the rain, and stand firm. Jesus explains that the wise man is the one who hears His words, and does them. When we meditate and act upon the words of Christ, we can withstand the storms of life, and stand firm.

2. To grow in faith (Romans 10:17).

Faith comes by hearing the word of God. Without God’s word, there is no faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). Hence, Bible reading is absolutely crucial for every Christian to grow in the faith, and be pleasing to God.

3. To defend against Satan (Ephesians 6:17).

The word of God is described as the “Sword of the Spirit.” Jesus used the Spirit’s sword to defend against Satan. Three times Satan tempted Jesus, and three times Jesus repelled Satan using the word of God (Matthew 4:1-11). To defend against the temptations of Satan, we need to have God’s word in our hearts always (Psalm 119:11).

4. To be wise unto salvation (2 Timothy 3:15).

Timothy had learnt the Scriptures since his childhood. The hours spent on God’s word would be of great profit, because it would help Timothy to be wise for salvation. Of all the books in this world, the book that we most sorely need is the Bible, because it is the only book that possesses the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16).

5. To be perfect and equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Since the Bible was given to us from God, it most certainly is useful for us. It teaches us, reproves us, corrects us, and instructs us concerning righteousness. Ultimately, the word of God helps us to become a complete man of God, and to be ready to do every good work.
